Guantanamo Bay: US Transfers 15 Inmates To UAE

Administration officials have said for months that they would speed up detainee transfers from Guantánamo this summer.

(ITV) – The US has said 15 inmates from Guantanamo Bay have been transferred to the United Arab Emirates – the single largest transfer of Guantanamo detainees during Barack Obama’s presidency.

The transfer of 12 Yemeni and three Afghan citizens brings the total number of prisoners at the controversial facility in Cuba down to 61.

Most have been held without charge or trial for more than a decade.

President Obama – who said he wanted to close Guantanamo during his first year in office – finally announced plans to shut the prison in February, saying the facility was “contrary” to American values.

Guantanamo, which is located on an American naval base in south-eastern Cuba, was opened by ex-US President George W Bush to hold foreign terror suspects in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
